Established in 1919, the Lithuanian University of Health Sciences (LUHS) holds the distinction of being the largest educational institution specializing in biomedical sciences in Lithuania. Initially known as the Medical Academy of the Lithuanian University of Health Sciences, it evolved into the "Faculty of Medicine" of the University of Lithuania in subsequent years.

In 2010, a significant development occurred as the Lithuanian Veterinary Academy and Kaunas University of Medicine amalgamated to create the Lithuanian University of Health Sciences. This public university currently boasts a student body exceeding 6,000 individuals, encompassing both national and international students. Notably, international students constitute 20% of the total student population.

The university attracts a vibrant student community hailing from 76 countries, including Germany, Israel, the United Kingdom, South Korea, Sweden, among others. The teaching faculty at the Lithuanian University of Health Sciences consists of a diverse group comprising over 1,000 lecturers, PhD professionals, professors, assistants, and associate professors.
