Officially known as Pitirim Sorokin Syktyvkar State University, or formerly as State University of Syktyvkar, the institution pays homage to Pitirim Sorokin, a distinguished Russian-American sociologist and political activist. Given its location within the Komi Republic, the university is often referred to as Komi State University.
